Things to do

JMU students are all about engaging with the community. Get out and explore!

  • Discover Shenandoah Valley National Park with a hike through the woods and see beautiful waterfalls and views.
  • Visit an amusement park. Kings Dominion is a 2-hour drive, Busch Gardens Williamsburg is 3 hours away, and there’s Virginia’s largest water park too.
  • Water Country USA.
  • Dance and sing along at one the many music festivals, including Rocktown, and Redwing Roots Music Festival.

JMU offers more than 400 different student clubs and organizations. By joining these clubs, you can easily make friends with American and other international students from over 90 countries around the world.

Cost of living

As a student, your cost of living is based on your own budgeting skills and lifestyle. As a campus university, JMU has lots of places designed specifically for students, such as stores and restaurants, which could be cheaper than going shopping or eating in restaurants off campus.

Career opportunities

The University Career Center will help you prepare for your career with resume writing, interview practice, and assistance with internship and job searches. James Madison University hosts Career Fairs throughout the year as well.

If you are looking for employment while you are at James Madison University and hold an F-1 visa, you will be restricted to on-campus Institutional Employment only. There are 300 departments that hire around 2,500 students per year in jobs ranging from dining hall services to graduate assistant positions.
