JMU what to pack

The International Study Center and James Madison University will be your ‘home away from home’ for the next couple of years. Naturally, students have a hard time deciding what to bring with them for the duration of their studies. Even small questions like ‘Will they have my favorite shampoo in the United States?’ or ‘Is one jacket enough, or should I carry two?’ can seem big. Read the blog post below to see what clothes and essentials you need to take with you when traveling to study at JMU.

Check the average yearly temperature at Harrisonburg, VA to determine what clothes you will need to take with you. Typically, Harrisonburg experiences a mild winter and a nice warm summer. Average temperatures are around -3 C in winter, and +30 C in summer. We suggest taking the following wardrobe basics, and remember that you will be able to buy relatively inexpensive clothes in the US later:

  • Underwear, socks
  • Sneakers
  • Dress shoes, sandals
  • Tank tops, undershirts
  • Short and long-sleeve shirts
  • Sweaters
  • Two or three sweatshirts or hoodies
  • Two coats or jackets
  • A formal outfit for special events or interviews
  • Work out clothing
  • Your favorite shirt or piece of clothing
  • Two or three pairs of jeans, shorts, or other types of pants
  • Swimsuit
  • Belts and accessories
  • Scarf, mittens, gloves, and ear-muffs for winter weather
  • Pajamas
  • Two pairs of flip flops

It is important to bring toiletries and personal hygiene products with you. Just remember to pack in small quantities or travel size for immediate use only. You can always buy additional toiletries at a supermarket when you need more.

  • Shampoo, soap, face wash
  • Lotion/cream
  • Medicated ointments/ skin creams used on a regular basis
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Shaving cream and razor
  • Deodorant and/or perfume
  • Contact lens solution

These are some of the items you will need to pack for your travels. If you would like to see what documents as well as medical items you should bring with you, check out this comprehensive blog post on the Universities in the USA and Canada website. Finally, if you cannot fit items into your luggage, you can always just ship them to your university residence. Welcome to JMU!
